The Ahrn Valley

Prettau - enclosed by the Zillertaler Alps in the North and the Hohen Tauern in the East - is situated at the end of the Ahrn valley. Due to its position on the climatically favoured southern slope of the main alpine chain, Prettau is characterised by an inner alpine climate. This and the various passes and saddlebacks led to an early settlement of the area. Finally, copper gravel was found and for 500 years the copper mine provided work for many people.
Furthermore, the mine influenced and shaped the valley.

As far as the scenery is concerned, Prettau offers marvellous views, a great number of walks and demanding trails. The Rieserferner-Ahrn National Park, to which parts of the area of Prettau belong, and the adjoining Austrian national park Hohe Tauern form the most extensive protected area of Europe. This particular area is characterised by a varied alpine animal and plant world.

Today tourism, the copper mine and the gallery for asthmatics play an important role for the village. Pillow laces and wooden masks are typical craft products made in Prettau.
